BUSBAR PROTECTION SYSTEM UPGRADE

CONTEXT
As one of GE Grid Solutions' longest serving channel partners, KSM provides GE relay solutions to critical industries. A project at a Petronas plant called for retrofitting 132kV and upgrading a 33kV busbar protection system across a total of 45 bays.
THE CHALLENGE
The existing mechanical-type busbar protection system no longer met performance demands. A numerical system using GE MiCOM P741 and P742 was proposed while maintaining the existing topology — but the existing Alstom MBCZ panel was relatively old, so a mock-up panel had to be built for Factory Acceptance Testing before any on-site installation.
KSM'S ROLE
KSM Energy carried out the wiring study, topology mapping, mock-up panel construction, factory testing, installation, commissioning and handover.
THE SOLUTION
A thorough wiring study allowed quick and accurate mapping of a new busbar topology. A mock-up panel was built and put through stringent testing before being trialled with the new protection system. Following FAT acceptance, the GE MiCOM P741 and P742 relays were installed and primary stability and secondary tests conducted during commissioning, with limitations rectified and reflected in the drawings.
OUTCOME
All as-built drawings were updated at handover and comprehensive training was delivered on the product and handling methods, with engineers and technicians providing round-the-clock first-hand technical support.
