CONTEXT
The Talin Power Plant in Kaohsiung is a 1,250-megawatt ultra-supercritical thermal power plant running on fuel oil and natural gas, operating at pressures of 4,640 psi and temperatures exceeding 1,100°C, with generating efficiency of up to 43.3%.
THE CHALLENGE
Fans, pumps and compressors at this scale generate extreme noise levels with real health risks to plant workers and the surrounding environment. The silencers required were large-format — 7,000mm × 5,000mm × 4,000mm excluding flanges — to be fabricated to 2mm tolerances and shipped internationally within one and a half months.
KSM'S ROLE
KSM Phoenix designed and fabricated four industrial noise silencers for the plant's expansion, working in partnership with engineers from Australia and Japan.
THE SOLUTION
In-house software enabled rapid, accurate noise calculations, demonstrated and approved by the Japanese client engineer before fabrication. Welding speed was controlled to minimise deformation, every flange clamped straight during cooling and re-processed if out of tolerance. Dye penetration testing was carried out on all welded parts, with third-party MPI testing and a final joint inspection by SGS. The silencers shipped disassembled across seven containers, every component labelled for accurate site re-assembly.
OUTCOME
All four silencers fulfilled the critical requirements and were delivered on time despite the extremely short lead time, reducing plant noise to safe and acceptable levels. The Japanese client's four auditors, who pre-audited the fabrication facility, witnessed progress in person every fortnight.
