WORKPLACE / ACOUSTICS
GOOGLE VENDOR OFFICE
MENARA SHELL, KL SENTRAL, KUALA LUMPUR — NOVICO ENGINEERING
CONTEXT
Google expanded its Malaysia footprint by adding over 150,000 sq ft of workspace across 10 floors of Menara Shell, KL Sentral — flexible production workspaces, collaboration nooks, entertainment areas, meeting rooms and a café sharing the same floors, each with distinct acoustic requirements.
THE CHALLENGE
Three constraints compounded one another: cleanroom-grade or waterproof material requirements in the café ruled out soft, foamy absorbers; conventional fibrous silencers were therefore not an option; and an open-ceiling layout removed the primary acoustic surface, leaving walls limited by the same material restrictions.
KSM'S ROLE
Novico Engineering provided acoustic design consultation, sound measurement and compliance advisory — advising on architectural and interior materials, reverberation time and acoustic calculations, and mechanical systems noise control.
THE SOLUTION
For the café ceiling — the most technically constrained space — acoustic plaster was specified: a cleanroom-compatible, visually seamless material with genuine absorption performance, air-flown from Europe specifically for this project. It was the first acoustic plaster ceiling installation in Malaysia.
OUTCOME
Each zone fulfilled its acoustic purpose: production workspaces remained quiet and conducive to focused work, while entertainment areas and meeting rooms contained chatter and energy within their designated zones — without compromising Google's intended aesthetic.
