SMART TUNNEL
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — PHOENIX NOISE CONTROL
CONTEXT
The Stormwater Management and Road Tunnel is a 9.7km dual-purpose tunnel built to combat flooding and traffic congestion in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Completed in 2007, it was later named one of CNN's World's Greatest Tunnels.
THE CHALLENGE
The tunnel's North and South ventilation shafts generated significant noise and pressure affecting surrounding residential and commercial areas. Compliance with strict noise and health standards was non-negotiable, alongside equally strict deadlines and evolving technical requirements.
KSM'S ROLE
KSM Phoenix was engaged to design, manufacture, supply and deliver the tunnel ventilation attenuators — reducing shaft noise without compromising structural integrity or airflow performance.
THE SOLUTION
Working in our own ISO-certified acoustic test laboratory and fabrication yard, the team ran multiple Factory Acceptance Tests under ISO 7235 covering insertion loss, flow noise and total pressure loss. Units were deliberately designed and tested to withstand extreme moisture conditions after flood events, stored in controlled conditions before delivery, and coordinated on site with third-party acoustic splitter installers.
OUTCOME
All attenuators met the specified noise and pressure drop criteria and were delivered and installed punctually. The SMART Tunnel has since operated continuously, diverting stormwater over 44 times and serving more than 30,000 vehicles daily.
