HOSPITALITY / ACOUSTICS
ROCKU YAKINIKU CHARCOAL GRILL RESTAURANT
KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA — NOVICO ENGINEERING
CONTEXT
Rocku Yakiniku is a Japanese charcoal grill restaurant combining yakiniku dining with live band performances, located in one of Kuala Lumpur's most popular shopping malls in close proximity to other retail tenants, common areas and shoppers.
THE CHALLENGE
Live band performances generate high sound pressure levels, and sound transmission to adjacent tenants and public corridors is tightly regulated in a mall environment. The interior design was already partially established, so any acoustic solution had to work within existing spatial and aesthetic constraints with minimal disruption.
KSM'S ROLE
Novico Engineering delivered a comprehensive acoustic advisory programme in collaboration with IR Chua, a renowned acoustic specialist.
THE SOLUTION
Detailed sound measurement assessments quantified noise levels and identified the primary transmission pathways — walls, ceiling connections and openings. Based on that data, rockwool acoustic insulation was specified at key locations within the wall and ceiling construction, selected for its high absorption coefficient, fire resistance and suitability for retrofit. Placements were integrated with the interior designers so the venue's atmosphere and visual concept were preserved.
OUTCOME
Sound leakage from the venue to adjacent mall tenants was reduced to within acceptable limits. The restaurant continues to run its live entertainment programme without disruption to neighbouring businesses — and without compromising the dining atmosphere.
