The Situation
KSM Phoenix received a noise control enquiry for the renovation and redevelopment of four existing offshore oil platforms in the Middle East. The scope: assess HVAC noise issues across all four platforms and deliver a practical, standards-compliant solution for each unique space type.
Offshore platforms present some of the most demanding engineering environments — constrained space, corrosive marine conditions, strict weight limitations, and zero tolerance for on-site rework. Every component needed to be right, first time.
The Challenge
The four platforms had complex and varied duct layouts, each with different noise profiles and space constraints. Managing pressure drop across the rectangular silencers was critical — on an offshore platform, excessive pressure drop in HVAC systems directly impacts worker comfort and safety in enclosed spaces.
The added complexity of time zone differences and geographic distance required close coordination with an overseas consultant throughout the design and selection process — with no margin for communication delays impacting the delivery timeline.
The Solution
Our engineering team conducted a thorough analysis of the duct layouts across all four platforms, identifying the primary noise sources and the specific noise criteria for each space type. Working alongside the overseas acoustic consultant, we identified the optimal changes to each duct layout and specified the best-performing rectangular silencer configuration for each space.
Stainless steel was specified for all silencers — essential for longevity and performance in the corrosive offshore marine environment. Throughout the fabrication period, our production and quality control teams ensured every silencer met the stringent client standards required for offshore service.
All silencers were delivered to site on time, meeting the project's critical schedule requirements.
The Results
The complete design and silencer selection process was concluded within the required timeframe despite geographical and time zone challenges.
